After attending school in Plymouth, Martin gained an MA in  jurisprudence from Exeter College, Oxford. 

He qualified as a solicitor in 1987. He has been a partner at Gill Akaster for over 10 years, and head of the Family Team since 2003.  He specializes in financial disputes arising from relationship breakdown. He also deals with all issues concerning children and has been a member of the Law Society’s Children Panel since 1994.

Martin is the Treasurer of the Devon branch of Resolution which is a national body of lawyers who conform to a code of conduct aimed at helping  families in times of difficulty. He also sits as a Deputy District Judge.
