|14/12/2010 - New statistics on marriage|
Some interesting figures have been published by the Office for National Statistics.
The number of married people in England and Wales in 2009 accounts for 40% of the population compared with 50% 30 years ago. The number of people who are divorced has risen in the same period from 2% to 8%.
The statistics estimate that 2% of weddings in 2009 took place abroad. This translates into over 300,000 people from England and Wales marrying abroad in the period 2002-2009.
Martin Leech, head of our family team says “ the statistics on weddings abroad mirror our experience. It is important for couples to keep their marriage certificates safely because the originals and, if appropriate an English translation, will be needed by the Court in the case of divorce. It is often difficult and expensive to obtain new ones some years later. It should also be borne in mind that the English and Welsh Courts usually have power to grant divorces in these cases providing at least one of the couple has a distinct connection here.”
